Log Home Restoration

The most effective method to remove failed stains and deteriorated wood fibers. This will get down to good bare wood which is ideal for stain adherence and will leave a like new appearance to most wood surfaces. Blasting can also be used to remove rust from metal.

More About Media Blasting

What is Media Blasting, and Why is it Used on Log Homes?

Media blasting is a surface preparation method that uses finely ground material (like crushed glass, corn cob or walnut shells) to gently strip away old stain, paint, dirt, mildew, or failing finishes from log surfaces. It is also a way to "start over" and change the color. It’s preferred for its ability to clean deep into the wood grain without harsh chemicals or excessive water.

What Types of Media Blasting Do You Offer

We use glass for most of our media blasting but we have used a multitude of media blasting. Glass seems to provide the best finish to the logs. Talk to our expert log home restoration specialists today about media blasting.

How Long Does it Take to Perform Media Blasting

It depends on the size of the project and the finish texture of the logs that is desired. We recommend blasting and then using an Osborn brush to "buffy" or smooth out the texture. Typically we can blast and buffy a house in less than a week.

Is Media Blasting Safe for My Logs? Will it Damage Them?

Yes — when done professionally, media blasting is safe for log homes. We carefully adjust pressure and media type to match the condition of your logs. The goal is to remove buildup without gouging, pitting, or softening the wood. It’s actually one of the most effective ways to restore logs without long-term damage.

How Messy Media Blasting?

Media blasting does create a fair amount of dust and debris — but don’t worry. We fully tarp and protect areas around your home and thoroughly clean up all media afterward. However, even with all of this protection, you will likely find some fine dust inside of your home.

How Does Blasting Compare to Chemical Stripping or Power Washing?

Power washing can be a good way to prepare wood for stain but if the wood is too damaged or needs a fresh start then you have to blast or chemical strip the wood.

Blasting is:

  • Dry — no risk of moisture intrusion

  • Eco-friendly — no harsh chemicals

  • More effective — reaches into grain and cracks

Will Blasting Affect Existing Chinking or Caulking?

Yes — in most cases, chinking and caulking should be reapplied after blasting. The process can loosen or degrade sealants, especially older materials. We’ll walk you through your options and help plan the full restoration sequence.

Do I Need to Leave My Home During Blasting?

Not necessarily — but we do recommend closing windows (even though they will be masked off) and while blasting is in progress. A fine dust can enter the home while blasting. We take care to minimize disruption and will walk you through any special preparations.
